Basha Bekele, a producer in the Bensa district of Sidama, Ethiopia, took first place at the 2024 Ethiopia Cup of Excellence with a natural 74158 lot scoring 90.50. Murago, where he grows his coffee, sits above 2,300m — among the highest villages in Bensa. Cherries ripen slowly in the cool climate, are carefully sorted, and dried at length on African beds, giving the rich sweetness characteristic of natural processing alongside the clean, articulate flavours of high-altitude Ethiopian coffee.

The altitude of Murago and Basha Bekele's meticulous processing come together in a cup that opens with floral aromatics and moves through ripe stone fruits and vivid tropical nuances. Bright, lifted acidity and a clean sugar cane sweetness linger long into the finish.
